How to keep a loved one’s grave alive from afar

When you are thousands of kilometers from your loved one’s resting place, longing takes a different shape. You cannot visit the grave, place a flower, or simply sit there for a few minutes. But that does not mean there is nothing you can do.

The first step is to set a “day of remembrance” — a day each month to think of them: light a candle, look at a photo, or arrange a tending. A small ritual calms the heart.

Second, make sure the grave always stays clean and adorned with flowers. Seeing a photo of a tidy, cared-for grave lifts a heavy weight — many families have told us so.

Third, keep the memory alive. Tell your children, look through photographs, and let their memory be part of your life today. Peace comes from that small, living bond.
